Leon Festinger's Theory of Cognitive Dissonance

Leon Festinger came up with the theory of cognitive dissonance in his book 'When Prophecy Fails' in 1956. The feeling of cognitive dissonance is caused by holding two contradicting beliefs at the same time. Festinger argued that we resist adjusting our attitudes unless faced with overwhelming evidence against it. The theory also stated that we seek out confirmation of our thoughts and beliefs. An example of this is some people would find it difficult to believe that a masculine man, such as a builder, would be gay. This theory could apply to our project, if people have preconceptions of business men being unfriendly, always rushing, arrogant and rude then they may find it difficult to comprehend our main character's behaviour at the end of the film.
