stereotypes in mean girls
I have included this clip of 'Mean Girls' into our research because in one of the opening scenes it introduces the different stereotypical groups in the cafeteria to a new student who has never been to a real school before. As a result of her being home schooled for the majority of her life, Cady (Lindsey Lohan) does not have the cultural code that the other student have, and is unaware that students would be separated into groups relating to their dress sence and hobbies.
The 'Asian Nerds' are playing cards across a table, contrasting to the 'Cool Asians' who are wearing revealing clothing and sitting in a relaxed manor around their table.
The 'Varsity Jocks' are all masculine, and appear quite stupid by fighting across their table, 'Unfriendly Black Hotties' are all giving the point of view camera questioning looks.
'Girls who eat their feelings' are all overweight and look very excited about eating a burger this juxtoposing the 'Girls who don't eat anything' who are all very skinny and sharing a can of diet coke between them.
The 'desperate wannabes' are disabled or small, I think this is the harshest stereotype so far! The 'burn outs' just look very relaxed which contrasts with The 'sexually active band geeks' who are all kissing eachother around the table.
The film is aimed at teenagers and young adults, I think that they have used a scene like this to explore stereotypes because it is something that people of our age can relate to. Although it is not so segregated in real life, with relation to the colour of skin etc, it is still seen in other stereotypes - goth, chav, indie.
