Signs / Semiotics

In todays lesson we walked round lutterworth on a task called "Mr. Smiths Semiology Treasure Hunt" we had to look for specific signs:

-Political Sign
-Religious Sign
-Imperative Sign
-Didactic Sign
-Denotative Sign
-an Advertisement
-an Icon
-an Index
-Charity Sign

(the photos will be up soon)
they fall into one of Barthes' 5 codes

Semiology is a way to analyse the media language of media texts, therefore when producing our media film we can improve the effectiveness by reviewing the semiological meanings within our film.

this activity also challenged our theorys of mediation and connotation why is a red circle with a cross through mean , its not allowed etc. but in example of our film we need to choose the right type of mediation, our film will contain a vigrant, not a tramp or hobo, this is just a small example. another easy example to use is,

-prostitute rather than slag or whore.
-elderly rather than old biddy/ coffin dodger
-overweight rather than fatty or slab-cracker
i think you get the idea!

we need to use mediation intelligently in our film to get across the prefered reading across to the audience.

Cheerio, Theodore x

p.s this blog is for caitlin to spite her comment in media , LOL ;)
