Stereotypes in Our Short Film

Our short film is going to contain two main characters, a business man and a homeless man, we need to explore the stereotypical views of these characters so that we can portray them in a believable way. I have just tried to come up with some keywords to describe both of the opposite characters.

A typical business man... wears a suit, clean shaven, neat, tidy, organised, shiney shoes, brief case, expensive gadgets, posh car, well spoken, rushing, arrogant, ignorant, selfish, clean, smart, attractive, smoking, stressed, busy, white teeth.

A typical homeless person... dirty, smelly, unshaven, unhappy, bored, hungry, face shows a lack of emotion, clothes with holes in - too small, slow, brown teeth, messy, no real material possessions, living in a cardboard box - clothes in bags, alcoholic, unattractive.

When coming up with key words to describe both of the characters, I found myself looking at what I had written for the other man and then trying to think of an opposite, this is because our leading characters are binary opposites!

Stereotypical business men always dress the same, as smart dress is required for their line of work, this can maybe be seen as a positive stereotype, however it is false to believe that business men are always arrogant, rushing and stressed. Our audience will automatically recognise our leading character as a business man because of his smart dress.
The vagrant will have to be dressed in dirty old clothes, and look physically unclean in order for our audience to believe he is homeless. It is not so much a stereotype to assume all homeless people are unclean, as they would find it difficult to wash living on the streets, however it is a stereotype to assume that vagrants are all alcoholics. It would help if the actor had a beard also :)
